A BACKGROUND IN AEROSPACE ENGINEERING
Felix’s journey into engineering began with his studies in aerospace engineering at the University of Stuttgart in Germany and the University of Toronto in Canada. He specialised in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, focusing on computational simulations of high-speed flows. His diploma thesis in Canada explored hypersonic combustion engines, particularly scramjets – propulsion systems that can travel at up to ten times the speed of sound.
Returning to Europe, Felix continued working in academia for three years at the University of Stuttgart, focusing on helicopter aerodynamics and computational fluid dynamics. His work involved close industry collaboration, applying numerical mathematics and aerodynamic simulations to complex fluid-structure interactions in rotorcraft design. Alongside research, he also contributed to lecturing and mentoring students.
FROM RESEARCH TO INDUSTRY
Felix transitioned from academia into the industry, starting at Kärcher, where he worked for five years as a senior expert and team leader in fluid mechanics. His role involved developing products varying from high-pressure cleaning systems to street sweepers, applying his knowledge of fluid dynamics to real-world industrial applications.
He later moved to Bosch, where he focused on cooling solutions for electric machines, working in both serial development and advanced research projects. His role involved innovation projects, acquisition initiatives, and strategic patent portfolio management, where he worked closely with the intellectual property department to oversee Bosch’s patent strategy for electric traction machines.
JOINING DEEPDRIVE AND PIONEERING COOLING SOLUTIONS
At DeepDrive, Felix works as a senior system engineer, focusing on developing and optimising new technologies especially for cooling of the electric machines. His work involves both measurement and simulation, ensuring that DeepDrive’s motors achieve optimal thermal performance and efficiency. He enjoys the company’s fast-paced approach, where new ideas can quickly be tested. Within just two weeks, one of his prototype designs went from concept to testing on the bench.
His current focus includes advanced simulations, where he modifies cad models, runs three-dimensional simulations, and evaluates different concepts before moving to prototyping. Given DeepDrive’s rapid development cycle, he values the balance between fast prototyping and detailed simulation work, allowing continuous innovation and refinement.
LIFE OUTSIDE OF WORK
Felix spends most of his free time with his three children, embracing his role as a dedicated dad. He is also deeply involved in his church community, where he enjoys mentoring young people and leading Sunday school activities for kindergarten children.
In sports, Felix is passionate about swimming, road cycling, and cross-country skiing. A former competitive swimmer, he still enjoys long-distance open-water swims. When he is not in the water, he enjoys taking his bike on long rides or heading into the mountains for cross-country skiing in the winter or hiking in summer. Music is another passion—Felix plays the saxophone, using music as a way to relax and unwind.
